The Chiefs assistant linebackers coach Britt Reid was involved in a multi-vehicle crash less than two days before the team was scheduled to leave for the 2021 Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida. Unfortunately, the incident left two young children injured, one of whom suffered severe injuries. The Chiefs confirmed that Reid, 35, was involved in a crash on Thursday, February 4th at approximately 9 p.m.
Reid was traveling southbound on Interstate 435 near Eastwood Trafficway in Kansas City when the crash occurred. According to police reports, a Chevrolet Impala that ran out of gas sat on the entrance ramp from Stadium Drive to I-435, awaiting roadside assistance from family members. After the other members arrived, they parked their Chevrolet Traverse in front of the disabled car and attempted to get the Impala up and running again.
Suddenly, a Dodge Laramie pickup truck driven by Reid passed onto the entrance ramp and struck the left front of the stranded Impala. The driver of the car was inside the vehicle at the time but, luckily, was unharmed. However, the Ram truck continued forward and hit the right rear of the Traverse. The adult passenger of the SUV sustained no injuries during the event of the crash. Sadly, there was a 5-year-old and 4-year-old in the backseat of the Traverse. According to emergency personnel, the 5-year-old reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries while the 4-year-old required medical attention for minor injuries.
Both children were transported to a local hospital for further examination. Hospital records indicate that the 5-year-old remains in critical condition. Their names remain undisclosed at this time.
Alcohol on His Breath
Authorities stated that they could smell a moderate odor of alcohol on Britt Reid, and his eyes appeared bloodshot red. Reid admitted to the officer that he consumed more than two drinks prior to getting behind the wheel and also admitted to taking an Adderall by prescription. Shortly after, Reid requested to be transported to a hospital to treat his stomach pains and injuries.
Once he received medical treatment, officers filed a search warrant and requested approval for a blood draw from Reid. They found that this was not Reid’s first DUI offense; he had multiple priors. According to court records in January 2008, he was charged with DUI: controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia just a few months later.
