10-Year-Old Child Fatally Killed in DUI Accident in Sacramento

|

Any amount of alcohol in your bloodstream can impact your driving ability. Driving while intoxicated causes delayed reaction time, lack of coordination, reduced concentration, and decreased vision—all of which increase the likelihood of a DUI accident. This dangerous combination sadly led to a child’s tragic death last month.

On April 19th, 2020, Tony Keterson of Colusa made the detrimental decision to operate a vehicle while under the influence. Unfortunately, Keterson’s poor choices resulted in the death of his passenger, a 10-year-old boy, whose identity has not been released.

The two-car collision occurred Sunday along Highway 20 in Sutter County. At approximately 6:30 p.m., Tony Keterson was driving a 2007 Ford Fusion eastbound at a fast speed when he lost control of his vehicle. CHP reported Keterson drove across the lanes and plowed into a concrete wall on the highway near South Tarke Road.

A Toyota Tacoma traveling in the westbound lanes attempted to brake but was unable to avoid colliding with the Ford. As a result, both vehicles took heavy damage.

Due to the extreme impact of the crash, the young passenger unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Tony Keterson sustained severe fractures to his spine, requiring extensive treatment at a local hospital.

Any form of drinking and driving is illegal and can result in strict punishment. Keterson was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into the Sutter County Jail. He faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, with bail set at $50,000.

As we saw in a similar crash, a DUI accident risks the lives of everyone involved, not just the driver. If a driver drives under the influence, he can be liable for the injuries and damage that happened during the DUI accident. When you head out on the road to drive, make sure that you are safe and capable to do so.
