Although not my preferred sporting event, the Long Beach Grand Prix attracts race car enthusiasts from all over the world. As with most sporting events, where there are enthusiastic fans, there are also alcohol vendors waiting to supply fan-favorite refreshments.
Long Beach Police will be out in full force during this weekend’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach trying to combat drunk drivers.
“Come to Long Beach and enjoy the exciting race day activities, but please designate a sober driver ahead of time or call a taxi to make sure not only you but others in the community get home safely,” Lt. Kris Klein of the Traffic Section said in a statement. “Driving-under-the-influence injuries and deaths are completely preventable tragedies.”
Although there will be police presence throughout the weekend, the Long Beach Police Department’s DUI Enforcement Team will be deployed, along with other law enforcement agencies on Sunday, April 13th in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and arrests. The DUI saturation patrols will deploy between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.
The Long Beach Police Department press release (which can be found here) made no mention of DUI checkpoints. However, it is not out of the realm of possibility that one be set up in a high traffic location. Just last weekend, the Long Beach Police Department nabbed six drivers for drunk driving during a DUI checkpoint held in the heart of Downtown Long Beach.
The heightened enforcement is funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Find a sober, designated driver and enjoy the cars. Don’t be caught drunk in one.
