Christmas Dui Crackdown

|

As Californians take to the road for holiday travels, law enforcement gears up for its annual drunk driving crackdown.

California Highway Patrol’s two-day “Maximum Enforcement Period” begins on 6pm on Christmas Eve and ends at 11:59pm on Christmas night. Increase in law enforcement presence on the streets and saturation patrols will be on the lookout for drivers who may have had a little too much brandy in their eggnog.

The CHP’s crackdown coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

During CHP’s 4 ¼ Christmas enforcement period last year, 1,170 DUI arrests were made and 39 people were killed in collisions on California roads. Of those killed, nearly a half were not wearing seatbelts.

“Christmas is a time for family and friends to get together, and we want to make sure everyone arrives safely at their destinations,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.  “Drivers are reminded to make wise decisions ahead of time for their own safety and the safety of others sharing the roadways with them.”

Some wise decisions include:

Not drinking if you plan driving,

If you plan on drinking, find alternative means home or make plans to stay the night,

Ensure that others don’t take to the streets after drinking,

Wear your seatbelt at all times because, even if you or your driver have not been drinking, other drivers on the road may have.

Have a safe, DUI-free, and happy holidays!
