L.A. provides free rides for Holidays

|

While so many people complain, including yours truly every now and again, about how little the city or local governments do for their citizens, it warms my heart with holiday cheer to tell you that the City of Los Angeles will be providing citizens with free rides for the holidays.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Metro will provide free bus and train rides on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in an effort to deter drunk driving.

Passengers won’t have to pay when riding on a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus or train from  9 p.m. Saturday through 2 a.m. Sunday.

The free rides will also be offered for those hours on New Year’s Eve, according to Metro officials.

On Friday, authorities announced that more than 1,000 people in Los Angeles County were taken into custody in the previous seven days for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a jump from last year, when there were 924 arrests.

The arrests were made by officers from dozens of law enforcement agencies participating in an annual winter holiday DUI crackdown.

The number of checkpoints and saturation patrols is expected to increase over the two holiday weekends, authorities said.
