I personally never understood it, but there is a genuine distain by many people of the Canadian rock band, Nickelback. Some people believe the songs are too generic and sound the same. Some just don’t like frontman, Chad Kroeger. Whatever the reason, the dislike is real and exists so much so that the Canadian town of Kensington has begun to punish drunk drivers with the band’s music.
According to the Kensington Police Service’s Facebook page, drivers who have been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving will be forced to listen to the band in the police car while being hauled off to jail.
"When we catch you, and we will catch you," said the department, "on top of a hefty fine, a criminal charge and a year’s driving suspension we will also provide you with a bonus gift of playing the offices copy of Nickelback in the cruiser on the way to jail."
Constable Robb Hartlen said that his department chose Nickelback over other hated bands partly because of Kroeger’s own DUI conviction in 2008.
"We are just using a different approach to get an age-old message communicated," said Hartlen, who admitted he himself doesn’t actually hate the band. "As long as it starts the ‘Don’t drink and drive’ dialogue, we’re happy with that."
We won’t be seeing any claims of a violation of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment because, so far, the punishment is only being implemented in Canada.
