Powdered Alcohol Approved by Federal Government

|

“What’s worse than going to a concert, sporting event, etc. and having to pay $10, $15, $20 for a mixed drink with tax and tip?” Surely, a question asked by many.

Solution? Enter Palcohol, powdered alcohol. Why? Because according to Palcohol’s website, “Sometimes liquid isn’t convenient.”

On April 8th, The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved the powdered alcohol and it is expected to hit shelves in the U.S. in the fall.

According to Palcohol’s website, adding it to five ounces of liquid “is equal to a standard mixed drink.” Six versions of alcohol will be sold in pouches. R is powder made from Puerto Rican rum. V is powder made from vodka distilled four times. Cocktail versions include cosmopolitan, mojito, powderita (Palcohol’s version of a margarita), and lemon drop.

Palcohol’s website says that it’s currently experimenting with adding Palcohol to various foods. “Beer, wine and spirits are often added to dishes to enhance the flavor. When you add Palcohol to food, you’re not really adding flavor to the dish, just alcohol. We’ve been experimenting with it like adding Powderita powder to guacamole, Cosmopolitan powder on a salad, etc. As Palcohol is a new product, we have yet to explore its potential of being added to food. As always, please use it responsibly. Because it adds alcohol to the dish, do not serve the dish to minors.”

Although Palcohol’s website insists that it be used in a responsible and legal manner, the potential for abuse remains. Questions about Palcohol’s accessibility to minors remain. As was the case with inhaling alcohol, which I wrote about some time ago, such a product could create uncertainty of exactly what it takes to become drunk. And when people don’t know how drunk they are, they may take to the road thinking that they’re fine to drive.

Regardless of how you intend on using Palcohol, arrive alive, don’t powder and drive.
