San Jose DUI results in crash causing death

|

With so many people having so many things to celebrate during the beginning of a new year, and having survived the entire holiday season of 2011 with no DUI related deaths, a recent accident has sobered us all by reminding us of the worst scenario.  According to the Mercury News, potential manslaughter charges await a southern California man who was recently arrested for DUI, resulting in an accident causing death.

A 2007 Dodge Caravan was seen topping speeds of 90 mph on northbound Interstate 680 around 7:35 p.m. Saturday from Milpitas into Fremont, said CHP Officer Steve Creel. Witnesses reported it traveling in the center median, both paved and dirt portions, grazing multiple cars as it sped along.

As it passed Scott Creek Road, the minivan suddenly swerved back into traffic, striking two cars and continuing right, eventually crossing the shoulder and going off the roadway. It stopped after hitting two trees, with the impact so ferocious it sheared the right side off the minivan and toppled one of the trees, Creel said.

The passenger in the minivan, a 55-year-old San Jose man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Salvador Espino, also a 55-year-old San Jose resident, was not seriously injured and was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on suspicion of DUI and a host of other offenses, including vehicular manslaughter.
