Ever take advice from the urinal? Yeah, me neither. However, males in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins should if they find themselves being told not to drink and drive by urinals at bars and restaurants in those cities.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has launched “The Heat Is On” campaign aimed at reducing drunk driving in Colorado. To reach out to possible drunk drivers, CDOT has launched radio, bus and billboard advertisements and installed “Interactive Urinal Communicators.” The UICs, as they’re being called, are ordinary looking urinal cakes that are able to detect movement and, when triggered, play a 15 second recorded audio message. The message encourages those who have been drinking to find alternative means home.
According to the Denver Post, CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford acknowledges that, while drinking amongst males between the ages of 21 and 34 may be unavoidable, drinking and driving is.
“As we’ve learned over the years, when people hear ‘Don’t Drink and Drive,’ a lot of times they just tune it out,” Ford said. “We recognize people make that choice to drink. We just want them to do it safely and get home safely.”
Like law enforcement agencies throughout California, Colorado is also cracking down on end-of-summer drunk driving. And, as unconventional as it may be, Colorado drinkers needing to relieve themselves can consider themselves warned.
For those of us in California, only time will tell if and when our urinals will advise us against drinking and driving.
