Prank Used as a DUI Prevention Method

The word “prank” is an understatement when describing what comedian Tom Mabe pulled off to teach a friend the dangers of his drunk driving habits. It was an outright production. Although, it may be quite funny to watch, the lesson that Mabe was trying to make certainly wasn’t.

Mabe convinced his friend Dennis, who had passed out drunk in his truck, that he was in a coma for 10 years after a DUI related accident.

Seems hard to believe, doesn’t it?

Mabe transported his drunk, passed out friend to a room that was set up as a mock hospital room. And before the “patient” woke up, Mabe dressed him up in a hospital smock and hooked him up to monitors. A hired actress pretending to be a nurse enters the room to check in on him and seems shocked he wakes up. She tells him that she’s going to get the doctor.

A doctor then enters the room and explains to Dennis that he was involved in a DUI related collision 10 years ago (in 2013) and that he had been in a coma since. Before leaving, the doctor turns the TV on to a fake news report where a news anchor reports on news from 2023. What are some of the news-worthy topics we have to look forward to according to Mabe’s fake news anchor? Without giving any spoilers away, the anchor discusses the recent exploits of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and President Hillary Clinton.

Another doctor enters the room. After performing some tests, the doctor, who is actually Mabe in doctor’s costume, slaps his friend and reveals his identity.

Mabe then berates his friend for continuing his drunk driving habits and tells him that he “could’ve lost a daughter. Ten years wasted away here!”

What good is a prank this elaborate if you don’t record it? The video, which can be found here, has already been viewed more than 12 million times.

The video ends with the words, “Happy Holidays Don’t Drink And Drive.”
