Tostitos Chip Bag Doubles As Breathalyzer

|

I’ve written about personal breathalyzers. I’ve written about SCRAM devices, anklets that detect alcohol in a person’s sweat. I’ve even written about the new temporary tattoo that can detect the alcohol in the wearer’s body. But this one is head scratcher even for me.

Tostitos has released a special-edition chip bag with a built-in sensor that can detect alcohol on a person’s breath.

The bag was released shortly before Super Bowl Sunday to remind people not to drink and drive and, ultimately, prevent DUI’s.

If the bag detects alcohol on a person’s breath, the image of a red steering wheel appears on the black bag with a warning not to drive and a code for a $10 Uber discount which was available only on Super Bowl Sunday.

The bag even has the capability of calling the Uber for you when connected to a smartphone.

Unfortunately, the bag had a very short shelf life (pun intended). Tostitos only made a limited number of the high-tech bags. The retailer did, however, offer Uber coupons on regular bags of its chips.

The Frito-Lay-owned brand partnered with Uber and Mothers Against Drunk Driving to pull off the stunt, which was orchestrated by San Francisco ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

Now I wouldn’t rely on the bag to know whether it was a good idea to get behind the wheel. Having said that, as I have with the other personal breathalyzers mentioned above, anything that helps people keep from getting behind the wheel is a good thing in my book.
