Federal Government: Approval of Palcohol was a Mistake

|

It seems I spoke too soon, but just barely.

The same day that my post went up about the approval of powdered alcohol by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, was the same day the federal government came out and said that the approval was a mistake. The approval has since been rescinded.

Tom Hogue, a representative for the federal bureau, said in an email to the Associated Press that the approval was issued in error.

Although Hogue, failed to say exactly how the error occurred, Palcohol’s parent company Lipsmark said that “there seemed to be a discrepancy on our fill level, how much powder is in the bag.” It plans on resubmitting the labels for approval.

Currently, a package of Palcohol weighs about an ounce, and certainly much more portable than a flask of liquid alcohol.

If Palcohol is approved in the future, it’ll be subject to state regulations and only available to adults over the age of other liquid alcohol.

Whether it’s approved now or later, Palcohol can create the risk for misuse. Its ability to be ingested in several different ways creates the uncertainty of potency. And when people are uncertain of exactly how intoxicated they are, they run the risk of a DUI.
