Medications Can Affect a Breathalyzer

  • By:DUI Blog

While some medications can cause a person to be “under the influence,” there are some medications that can actually cause a breathalyzer to give a high BAC reading either because they contain alcohol or because they contain components that can cause a false positive.

Got a toothache, canker sore, or cold sore? If you relieve the pain with some Anbesol and are subsequently pulled over, a breathalyzer might detect the alcohol in the medication rather than the alcohol that was consumed, if any. The oral gel is 10 percent benzocaine, 0.5 percent phenol, and a whopping 70 percent alcohol. That 70 percent alcohol content can certainly cause an increased breathalyzer reading. Other cold sore medications can have alcohol contents of up to 90 percent.

Congested from a cold or flu? Think twice about taking Vicks Formula 44 before getting behind the wheel. Formula 44 Cough contains 10 percent alcohol and Formula 44D contain 20 percent alcohol. Taking a swig of the Formula 44 before a breathalyzer can contribute to causing a person to blow above the legal limit of 0.08 percent BAC.

Another medicine people take to help them sleep through the symptoms of a cold or flu is NyQuil. However, one of the reasons why it helps people sleep is because it contains 25 percent alcohol. Not only can taking NyQuil before driving cause a person to be “under the influence” even if they are not drunk, it can also cause a person to test above the legal limit.

Believe it or not, some cough drops contain alcohol. Although cough drops may not have as much alcohol in them as the other cough medications mentioned above, they could still cause a higher breathalyzer reading. This is especially true if a piece of the cough drop gets caught between the teeth after it’s chewed.

Does asthma have you reaching for the inhaler? Unfortunately, Albuterol, which is the medication within inhalers, contains methyl groups. Breathalyzers test for the presence and amount of methyl groups, which are the primary chemical bonds found in alcohol. Therefore, if a person submits a breath sample to law enforcement shortly after using an inhaler, the BAC reading may be erroneously high.

This list is not exhaustive. Be sure to read the labels on both prescription and over the counter drugs. Remember that, not only can medications cause someone to be “under the influence” for purposes of a California DUI, but they can also cause a person to provide an unusually high BAC reading on a breathalyzer.

I’ll offer an extra word of warning to the sick asthmatic with a toothache who may be reading this.

I had been using Anbesol and listerine for a month for a bad tooth, was breathalyzed and accused of dui, have you seen previous cases that a BAC was high from using Anbesol? which contains 70% alcohol!

Hi Nick, I was wondering what your outcome was with the anbesol?

I have recently been arrested for dui but did not consume any alcsol and the other thing I can think that could have caused that reading was either spiked drinks or it was the anbesol I took prior to driving. I just wanted to see if anbesol could have potentially caused a high reading? And if so how was this proven at court. I would be very grateful if you could let me know.

Supposubly, higher body temperature can cause false readings, I am also looking into acid reflux, because I have been having issues myself with mine. I haven’t drank in almost two years, I drink Monster and Coffee regularly and smoke. Have extremely bad acid reflux. For past week been having issues with it, the company says i blew .024 and higher on warns and fails and before that like a .01 something now how is this possible if no alcohol is consumed. I am personally leary of cold medicines, I take Excedrin Migraine for bad migraines. I am also prescribed medication for acid reflux which seems to have gotten worse. I am still waiting for them to give me an answer on acid reflux. If it can be caused by acid reflux (which can be caused by carbonated drinks, stress, coffee, tobacco) then why aren’t we warned about this. This will be second year with device and had the interlock replaced recently because of issues. I am debating on switching to another company because of the issues.

Acid reflux medicine makes your acid reflux worse because it reduces stomach acid and worsens digestion. Many people are prescribed these medicines when their actual problem is making too little stomach acid.
This causes food to literally rot and ferment (alcohol) in your G.I. trac. This may be part of the problem. To effect a cure, don’t drink anything while you’re eating a meal so that you don’t water down your stomach acid, eat lemons with dinner, eat more raw fruits and vegetables which contain high plant enzymes for digestion and consider going to a classical homeopath for a real life-long cure.

I have recently been diagnosed with PNH and Aplastic Anemia and had and my CBC (complete blood count) at the emergency room where I was taken after collapsing was 3.2. Could this affect my BAC? I got a DWI at a level near 3.0 and I hadn’t had more than a couple glasses of wine?

I am also taking Cyclosporine (prescribed) for my blood cancer and it has high levels of alcohol. Is this a factor?

Please advise and thank you so very much for your time and insight.

I was at the lake & had not even finished my first beer when a police officer IMMEDIATELY made me test. I am both an asthmatic & diabetic. I blew a 0.34 but passed field sobriety tasks easily. Still went to jail. Public intox. & nearly a dui because “car keys were on my person”. Aka pants pocket.

I am using an inhaler which has gotten me in trouble but the big problem is that I am required to have an interlock device but due to the ethanol content in the inhaler I cannot use the interlock device and am told my only option is to suspend my license. I firmly believe the one size fits all penal system is severely flawed for those folks who have to pick health over civil rights.

This combination would not create a higher BAC, however, it can be considered a Combination effect, and would show more on the field sobriety tests. One should never mix alcohol and prescription drugs. Read the labels next time.

I wanted to know if you are in an accident and the police come out and think I’m under the influence of controlled substance they gave me a blood alcohol test and I blew a 0.00000. I was arested because they gave me Road side test and they said I didn’t pass. I will never be able to pass that test as I’ve had 5 knee surgeries and a shoulder surgery. I was not on or doing anything. I was in shocked and upset I had my son in the car with me. I was put in jail on the 31st of October and never saw the judge. My question is can they still charge me or not. I went to the police station and tried to get the info on my case they had nothing. They told me to call the DA’s office, I did they had no idea what I was talking about. They had no information on me.
