Faulty Breathalyzers In San Francisco

|

Police officials in San Francisco have recently confirmed that an investigation has revealed a rash of faulty calibrations with breathalyzer machines used by San Francisco law enforcement for DUI convictions.

The finding has cast uncertainty on hundreds of DUI convictions dating back to 2006. The District Attorney is currently reviewing potentially affected cases.

This news is the latest in several waves of flawed breath readings occurring in other counties, including Santa Clara and Ventura. These counties saw several cases dropped due to the use of faulty machines by law enforcement.

Last year the Philadelphia District Attorney offered new trials to nearly 1,500 people as a result of similar happenings.

In San Francisco, however, those who suffered DUI convictions are unlikely to see any change in the status of their conviction unless the conviction was secured primarily through evidence gathered from the breathalyzer.
