Busy St. Patrick’s Day weekend

|

The 2012 St. Patrick’s Day DUI Mobilization crackdown on drinking drivers resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from Sobriety Checkpoints, according to a release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Dept.

Various law enforcement agencies that included Special Saturation Patrols as well as routine patrols participated in the Orange County “Avoid the 38  DUI Campaign.

From 6 p.m. on March 16th through 6 a.m. on Sunday, officers representing 38 county law enforcement agencies arrested 64 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Fortunately, there were no DUI-related fatalities reported during the holiday period.

DUI checkpoints, along with regularly scheduled high visibility DUI Saturation Patrols, are proven strategies with the goal of removing impaired drivers from the road and heightening awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Law enforcement officials will be conducting more “Avoid” DUI operations throughout the county and region during Cinco de Mayo and the Memorial Day Weekend in May. Police, sheriff and the California Highway Patrol encourage all motorists to help law enforcement every day by calling 9-1-1 to report suspected drunk or impaired drivers.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
