Holiday Dui Arrests Through The Roof

|

As anticipated, counties throughout the state really ramped up their law enforcement personnel through the recent holiday weeks. According to the Patch, in an 11 day timeframe from December 16th to 25th, just about 500 people were arrested for DUI in Orange County alone.

If you do the numbers, that comes in at a little more than 50 DUI’s per day over the 9 day period.   At a time when most people are celebrating “peace on earth and good will towards all men,” government officials saw opportunity.

In Orange County, 476 people were arrested for driving under the influence between Dec. 16 and Dec. 25. The crackdown on drunk driving in Orange County is part of the 38-agency holiday DUI deployment known as “Avoid the 38.”

So far this holiday season, no DUI related deaths have been reported in Orange County.

The CHP jailed 889 alleged drunken drivers statewide, compared with 658 last year.

In 2010, 443 DUI arrests occurred during the same 10-day time period in Orange County, and there was one fatality statewide.

Over the next several days of the campaign, DUI checkpoints will be conducted in Anaheim, Buena Park, Huntington Beach, Laguna Niguel and Westminster. Between now and Jan. 1, extra DUI saturation patrols will be deployed in most cities throughout the county.
