The typical symptoms police officers were taught to be aware of when training at the police academy are:
- A flushed, or red, face
- Red, watery, glassy and/or bloodshot eyes
- An odor of alcohol on the breath
- Incoherent, or slurred, speech
- Trouble retrieving license from a wallet
