1. When searching for intoxicated drivers on the highways, what will attract officers to a vehicle?
Beginning with the most probable symptom, the following is a list of possible symptoms an officer will look for on the roads. (based on research provided by the National Highway Traffic Administration)
- Making a wide turn
- Straddling the central marker between the lanes
Appearing to be Drunk
- Nearly hitting either another vehicle or an object
- Weaving
- Driving on Other Than Designated Highway
- Swerving
- Speeding over 10 mph above the designated limit
- Stopping without reason in the traffic lane
- Following too closely to other vehicles
- Drifting
- Driving with the tires on the center marker between lanes
- Braking erratically
- Driving into opposing or crossing traffic
- Signaling in ways that do not follow driving actions
- Slow reflexes to traffic signals
- Stopping inappropriately (other than in the lane)
- Turning illegally or unexpectedly
- Speeding up or slowing down quickly
- Headlights are not on
